Project:
Energy Modeling for building of 300 m2
Location:
Heredia, Costa Rica
Request:
Determine the load of heat consumption for building remodeling.

Overview:

Car dealership of international company requires to remodel agency in the area of Heredia Costa Rica.

Problem:

The thermal load that the air conditioning equipment will have to assume is unknown, with the design parameters of the façade of the new building.

The client wants to know if their current equipment will be able to cope with the design of the remodel.

Solution:

An energy modeling of the new building is carried out, where the characteristics of the terrain, the local climate, the opening hours, the number of people who will visit the place and the thermal performance of the materials of the new façade are evaluated.

Project:
Energy Modeling for building of 300 m2
Location:
Heredia, Costa Rica
Request:
Determine the load of heat consumption for building remodeling.

Results:

It was possible to find two opportunities for the conservation of energy.

Place glasses with higher U and a better SHGC value that allow reducing heat gain on the east façade during the mornings.
HVAC performance evaluation. PSC-AC (Packaged rooftop air conditioner) technology is compared against a VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) system. Both systems are simulated with their cooling capacity defined by the manufacturer. Both scenarios are compared in a parametric analysis, with a medium voltage electricity rate constant.

Modeling results

Graph of the number of hours of sunshine accumulated in a typical day

Predominant direction of the winds.

Operating temperature graph with normal windows.

Operating temperature graph with windows with the best U value and best SHGC value.

Conclusions:

Although the windows with the best thermal characteristics have a higher level of initial investment, the savings they contributed to electricity consumption throughout the year will allow an attractive recovery for management financial. The efficiency of the VRF system over the direct expansion pack system, allowed to reflect another important saving in electricity consumption. The two energy conservation opportunities represented for the customer a saving of 48% reduction in electricity consumption of the air conditioned. Generating a much lower operating cost than they would have had if they were continued with the specification proposed at the beginning of the project.
